Living in Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta

Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta is the southernmost barrio of Nou Barris, a compact grid of about 26,000 people bounded by Passeig de Fabra i Puig, Avinguda Meridiana and Passeig de Maragall. Most housing is plain mid-century apartment blocks from the decades when this side of the city grew fastest, but pockets of an older Vilapicina survive: three passages of early-1900s houses (Arquitecte Millas, Santa Eulalia and Esperanca) and Torre Llobeta itself, a 15th-century Gothic manor that has served as the neighbourhood civic centre since 1983. It is an unpretentious, mostly working- and middle-class area with everyday shops, bars and a proper covered market, and it holds its festa major in the second week of October.

Getting around

Metro coverage is the barrio's best feature. Vilapicina and Virrei Amat, both on L5, sit inside it, and Maragall on the southern boundary links L4 and L5. L5 runs direct to La Sagrera and Sagrada Familia; allow 15 to 20 minutes to the central Eixample. At the north-east corner, across Meridiana, the Fabra i Puig hub combines an L1 metro stop with the Sant Andreu Arenal Rodalies station (R3, R4, R7 and R12), useful for trips toward the Valles. Buses run along Fabra i Puig and Meridiana. The terrain is mostly flat. Walking to Placa de Catalunya takes around an hour, so in practice you ride the metro.

The wooded hill of Turo de la Peira park is directly across Passeig de Fabra i Puig, the closest big green space, and the Torre Llobeta civic centre runs activities and workshops through the year. Food shopping centres on the Mercat de la Merce, the covered municipal market on Fabra i Puig with around 58 stalls. Healthcare is unusually good for a residential barrio: the CIS Cotxeres complex on Avinguda dels Quinze, inside the neighbourhood, houses a CAP with family medicine, nursing and paediatrics, plus a CUAP urgent-care centre that covers the whole Nou Barris district. Schools follow Barcelona's proximity-based allocation, so your street decides your priority list, and catchments are worth checking before committing to an address.

Nou Barris is consistently among Barcelona's most affordable districts, and this barrio, with the metro on its doorstep, is one of its best-connected corners. Expect 1950s to 1970s buildings as the norm; quality varies, some blocks have been renovated and others not, and smaller ones often lack a lift, so ask before you visit. The visible change nearby has been the gradual remodeling of Avinguda Meridiana with more trees and calmer traffic. For value hunters the trade-off is simple: fewer landmark streets and less nightlife than the central districts, in exchange for space, transit and normal neighbourhood life.
