Neighborhood solidarity here is not a slogan - it is a lived reality, with active associations, community gardens, and mutual aid networks. Two-bedrooms average EUR 850, and the L3 metro at Roquetes has improved connectivity since its relatively recent opening. The streets are steep, the architecture is modest, and amenities are basic. Green space is the silver lining - the edge of Collserola is right there, and the air is noticeably fresher than in the valley below. Safety is a 5, which reflects challenges but also ongoing community investment. Living in Les Roquetes is for budget-focused relocators who value community spirit and proximity to nature over polish and convenience.
Living in Les Roquetes
Les Roquetes climbs the hillside at the top of Nou Barris, between Canyelles and Trinitat Nova, with the Collserola ridge behind it and the Ronda de Dalt below. It was built largely by its own residents: migrant families arriving from the 1950s put up self-built houses, and in 1964 neighbours famously dug the sewers and water lines themselves on their days off because the city had not provided them. That history still shapes the place; it is a working-class barrio with strong community organisations. The housing is modest, small self-built houses and plain low-rise blocks improved over the decades, packed onto steep, narrow streets. About 16,500 people live in just 64 hectares, so it is dense, local and lived-in rather than polished.
Getting around
The metro arrived in 2008: Roquetes station on the green line L3, dug into the slope, with lift access at its entrances on Carrer de les Torres and beside the Parc de les Roquetes. The ride to Placa Catalunya takes around 25 to 30 minutes. Via Julia station on the yellow L4 is a downhill walk away on the Prosperitat side. Nine TMB bus lines serve the barrio, including the D50, H2 and V29 plus the 127 neighbourhood bus, and that coverage matters because the hill is serious: the city has installed escalators and public lifts on some of the steepest streets. Cycling here is realistic only if you are happy climbing; most people combine metro, bus and walking.
For families
CAP Roquetes-Canteres on Carrer de Garigliano 23 handles primary care, with family medicine, paediatrics and nursing, open 8 to 20 on weekdays plus Saturday mornings. The standout school is Institut Escola Antaviana at Carrer de Nou Barris 12, a public school running from P3 all the way through ESO, set inside the green Parc del Pla de Fornells with its own multi-sport court. On the barrio's edge, the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, a community-run cultural centre in a former asphalt plant that neighbours occupied in 1977, runs well-known children's and youth circus schools. Add the Parc de les Roquetes by the metro and local playgrounds, and family logistics work fine, as long as you plan around the slopes.
Before you rent
Nou Barris is consistently the cheapest district in Barcelona, and Roquetes sits at the affordable end even within it, so rents here are about as low as they get inside the city. The trade-off is the stock: much of it was self-built or cheaply built between the 1950s and 1970s, so check for lifts (plenty of walk-ups have none), damp, insulation and heating. Geography matters more than in most barrios: a flat listed as ten minutes from the metro can mean ten minutes uphill, so walk the route before committing. On the plus side, public investment keeps arriving; the barrio has had city neighbourhood-plan funding, and 1.8 million euros was recently allocated to redo the main square and its underground car park.
