Gothic Quarter
Locally known as el Barri Gotic
Walking through the Gothic Quarter means literally walking on Roman roads. Placa Sant Jaume has been the political center of Barcelona for two thousand years, and the narrow alleys around the Cathedral still follow the old Roman grid. Living here means tourist crowds during the day but surprisingly quiet streets after dark, when the tapas bars on Carrer de la Merce fill with locals. A two-bedroom will set you back around EUR 1,500, and flats tend to be small and old, with high ceilings and questionable plumbing. Green space is almost nonexistent - this is stone and history. Three metro stops (Liceu, Jaume I, Drassanes) keep you connected, and the walkability score is as high as it gets. The tradeoff for living in the Gothic Quarter is clear: you get atmosphere no other neighborhood can match, but you pay for it in noise, tourist density, and rent that keeps climbing. Expats and nightlife lovers thrive here. Families looking for playgrounds should look elsewhere.
