Diagonal Mar

Locally known as Diagonal Mar i el Front Maritim del Poblenou

Diagonal Mar is Barcelona's most modern neighborhood - a grid of glass towers, manicured parks, and a shopping mall that doubles as the social center. Built for the 2004 Forum, it feels more Miami than Mediterranean. The Diagonal Mar park, designed by Enric Miralles, is one of the city's most architecturally ambitious green spaces, and the wide promenade stretching along the beachfront provides excellent walking and cycling. The CCIB convention center and Museu Blau science museum add cultural weight. Two-bedrooms average EUR 1,600, and the L4 metro at Maresme-Forum connects you to the rest of the city. The downside: it can feel sterile compared to the Gothic Quarter's chaos, and some blocks lack the street life that makes Barcelona special. Best for families who want space, new construction, and sea views, or remote workers who prefer a quiet, modern apartment. The beach is a five-minute walk, and that counts for a lot.

Living in Diagonal Mar

This is Barcelona's newest barrio, built mostly between the late 1990s and the 2004 Forum on former industrial land, including the old Macosa factory site. Instead of a tight street grid you get large modern apartment complexes with green space between the buildings; the best known are the tower groups beside the park, Illa de la Llum, Illa del Bosc, Illa del Mar and Illa del Cel. Around 13,500 people live here, and daily life is organised around the Parc de Diagonal Mar, the beaches, and the Diagonal Mar shopping centre, one of Catalonia's largest. It feels planned and open rather than village-like: wide streets, sea air, and buildings with lifts and garages rather than old Poblenou charm.

Getting around

The yellow metro line L4 has two stations here, Selva de Mar and El Maresme/Forum, and runs straight into the centre, reaching Urquinaona in roughly 20 minutes. The Trambesos tram runs along Avinguda Diagonal at the top of the barrio, useful for Glories and the 22@ office district, and TMB buses including the 7, 36 and 41 cross the area. The Ronda Litoral ring road is right there for drivers. This is one of the easiest parts of Barcelona to cycle: flat ground, the Diagonal bike lane and the seafront promenade. Walking to the old town along the beach takes about an hour, so the metro is the everyday option.

For families

The barrio was planned with families in mind. Parc de Diagonal Mar, designed by Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, covers 14 hectares, one of the biggest parks in the city, with playgrounds inside it. The local beaches, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella, are quieter and more family-oriented than the central ones, with the Forum bathing area beyond them. The neighborhood has its own primary care centre, and schools were built as part of the development; the public secondary school Institut Front Maritim, covering ESO and batxillerat, is on Carrer d'Espronceda on the Poblenou side. Sports facilities were part of the same plan.

Before you rent

Almost everything here dates from after the late 1990s, so lifts, parking and decent condition are the norm, and you pay for it: this is one of the more expensive corners of the city, especially the seafront towers. Things to weigh before signing: the Forum site next door hosts big festivals, and noise from those weekends is a recurring local complaint. The barrio is still filling in, so some plots remain under construction. Street life is also thinner than in old Poblenou, a short walk inland, where the Rambla del Poblenou has the bars, markets and small shops. If you want new-build comfort near the beach it delivers; if you want a classic neighborhood feel, look one barrio inland.
