Barceloneta
Locally known as la Barceloneta
Barceloneta smells like salt air and grilled sardines, and that is exactly why people live here. This former fishermen's village is a tight grid of narrow streets between the port and the beach, where drying laundry still hangs between buildings and old men play cards in Placa de la Font. Apartments are tiny - many were originally built as single-room workers' housing - and a two-bedroom runs about EUR 1,400 with rents climbing fast at +10% per year. The L4 metro at Barceloneta station gets you into the city, but the real draw is stepping outside your door and being on the sand in three minutes. The boardwalk stretching toward Vila Olimpica is one of the best running and cycling routes in the city. The downside: summer weekends bring a crush of tourists, and nightlife noise from Port Olimpic carries. Digital nomads love the beach-to-laptop lifestyle, and the chiringuitos (beach bars) make for great outdoor office alternatives.
